Special Edition Laminates - Purple Heart & Maple Series
Some projects take longer than others, and the maple and purple heart striped Knucklebone and Nowhere Plank are a perfect example. With development spanning almost a year to come to fruition, we had the custom laminate done up, and our supplier has finally nailed the manufacturing.
The Knucklebones are probably the funkiest wooden kbones we've ever produced, rivalled only by the spectraply beauties we did with Grain Theory a couple of years back. These take it to a new level with the stunning contrast from the deep tones of the purple heart against the classic wooden brightness of maple. The play on geometry of a straight line contained in such a curved object is entirely unique in our broad catalogue of kbone patterns and finishes.
The Nowhere Plank holds a somewhat different take. Whilst maintaining the stunning colours of the knucklebone, it is rigidly bound to its linear form. There is something extremely calming to perceive the clear separations of the wood types mixed with the organic ebbs and flow of the woodgrain.
Both the Knucklebones and Planks come in a machined and polished versions muting and extenuating the wooden nature respectively.
In addition, we’ve also created a polished and machined bundle which includes our first version of this wood combination, namely, our Maple and Purple Heart Dubulo.
This is the original size of the Dubulo toy, from back in the days we were still calling it Monkey Knuckles. It has a great weight, and while it starts out less smooth on the string than our delrin options and mini ebony version, this is actually a nice feature for those getting into the toy for the first time. The friction between the bores and the cord helps the balls to hang on the string, which is extremely helpful for learning the initial move set. Over time, the cord will smooth out the edges of the bore further, making them slide more smoothly, which is a desirable feature as your skills advance. For any veterans wanting to expedite the process, it’s a simple matter of working the balls back and forth on the cord for a bit, much like how us old schoolers used to break in the wooden axles on our yo-yos back in the day.
NOTE: The bundles are a set of a polished or machined Knucklebone and Plank respectively but the Dubulo will always be the machined version.
