MKUltras Chef's Specials - 10mm Wooden Beads Editions

Aroundsquare’s round 10mm wooden MKUltras have been configured in what we lovingly refer to as our “chef’s special” setup. This is a flipping-oriented setup, featuring a cord that is long enough to wrap twice around the wrist, while having fewer beads than our standard “long form” setups. These sets also feature a distinctive double boss at the ends, for extra weight and security. The result is a very distinctive set of beads that sits comfortably without bulk on the wrist, while being highly adept for flipping, raindrops, and other manipulations. 

The design balances the fluid movement of traditional worry beads with the more active handling characteristics of a flipping toy. Compared with our larger options, the compact 10mm beads make for a lighter, more nimble setup, while the double boss ends provide additional options for grip transitions and end manipulation. The length of the cord allows the sets to move easily between wearable accessory and handheld manipulative. 

The sets are available in two beautiful options, ebony paired with brass, and green sandalwood paired with titanium. Both woods have a smooth, finely polished surface and a satisfying, crisp sound when handled, with ebony providing a little additional density and weight while green sandalwood offers a slightly lighter feel. Note that the brass double boss on the ebony sets is substantially heavier than the titanium used on most of our Chef's Specials, which will change the "packet" arrangement of beads used to achieve balance during play compared to other versions. Both sets are an elegant and versatile setup for those who enjoy a little more movement in their beads.

General Information on the MKUltras

The MKUltras are a hybrid design, combining elements of traditional Mala and Komboloi beads. The MKUltra name gives a nod to this lineage, as well as their expedience as tools to help us focus our minds and still our thoughts. They can be used in a variety of ways, ranging from quiet bead counting, through to raucous flipping.

The unique setup of the MKUltras allows them to be worn like mala beads, or carried discretely in the pocket. They adjust by means of a simple friction fit through the larger "Micro Boss" bead closure. Although the design is exceedingly simple, we're fairly confident you won't find anything quite like them around. This is a knotless system, and does not require any special lock bead. The cord is simply compressed when threaded through the Micro Boss bead, providing a reliable, secure fastener, that is easy to adjust when needed.

In this way, the Ultras can be worn on the wrist, or loosened and slid up above the elbow to keep them out of the way when needed. Excess cordage can be knotted loosely around the Micro Boss bead when they are worn on the wrist, or left dangling. This modifiable arrangement allows them to be used very quietly, for simple bead counting used in breath work and meditation, to "raindrop" methods marked by the satisfying, rhythmic clacking of the beads, as well as much more physical methods of manipulation which resemble short game begleri play. While they aren't intended as a highly technical skill toy, there are still a solid range of moves you can link together, and lots of ways of working with them.
