Deadeye - Mokume Gane
Deadeye - Mokume Gane
Aroundsquare’s Deadeyes are part skill toy, part worry stone, part mind control device. Roll them between your fingers, or press use your thumb into the smooth contour and breath deep to dissolve the stresses of daily life.
These contact coins are designed to be handled and manipulated. On the surface, the Deadeyes look like just a refined worry stone made from metal, and they certainly serve well for that. They are precisely crafted and beautifully finished, with an ergonomic indent on either side that is perfect for thumbs of any size. But as you’d expect from AO2, there’s more to it than that. The concave shape and resulting ridge around the perimeter make the Deadeyes perfect for contact-style manipulation. With practice, they can be made to roll fluidly between the fingers, or back and forth over the thumbs, and isolations can be performed where the coins appear to be floating around the fingertips.
Our Mokume Gane Edition
This beautiful edition is precision machined from a solid billet of mokume gane. This unique material is made from fusing together layers of metals, and working the billet into a patterned material that almost resembles wood grain. When machined to our specifications, the grains of the material become exposed in a way that accentuates the appearance of the curves, creating a beautiful pattern.
The mokume deadeyes will ultimately be offered with your choice of either vertical/ cross-sectional grain pattern, or horizontal/ topographic grain pattern. However, at this time, only the vertical/ cross section style grained model is available.
The mokume gane Deadeyes are available either polished or etched. The polished version ships very clean/ unoxidized, and as such, has almost no patina and very little contrast between the layers of material. As the material ages, it will begin to patina, with the darker copper layers becoming particularly pronounced. The etched version has been bathed in a corrosive solution, exposing the raw materials underneath. Since the different metals are not equally corroded, the etched version ships showing more contrast between the layers.
This elegant Deadeye may not be for everyone due to its weight and price point, but for those who know what they're getting into, you're bound to cherish this piece, and to appreciate it even more as the metals begin to patina and the grains pop. The weight of the mokume gane deadeyes is similar to the existing brass model, around 45g per piece, giving it a substantial feel in the hand, and plenty of weight for practicing isolations.
