But the truth is, there are already plenty of incredible modern yo-yos out there. The hobby has become increasingly sophisticated and technical over the past few decades, with ball bearings, extreme designs, and aircraft grade materials.. but there has always been something really basic and special about the feel and the experience of throwing, sleeping, and looping a genuine wooden yo-yo. So for this project, we went back to basics. The Not Machine is a small, light, fixed-axle wooden throw inspired by the classic yo-yos we grew up with—the kind you could toss in a pocket, take anywhere, and throw simply for the pleasure of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe design actually began in the early 1990s, pencilled into a notebook during a high-school social studies class. We dug it back up, refined the proportions, prototyped it, dialed it in some more, and gave it a construction that makes the most of the material and manufacturing experience we’ve gained over the years. The result is a beautiful little piece of hardware that will feel both nostalgic and fresh at the same time. It combines a classic modified profile with generously rounded edges, metal hardware, and wooden axle sleeves for a satisfyingly responsive feel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt 50mm in diameter and around 40g, the Not Machine is deliberately compact and light. It won't win any awards for sleep time, and it's not a testing ground for the latest yo-yo technology. And that's part of the point.. It’s back to the basics.
