It has very high loft, and is naturally anti-bacterial and odour resistant. A big part of the design effort with these was to create a garment that would remove friction at the transition points between activities. They are actually the culmination of years of cut and sew experimentation, refining the initial design to create something that would allow the unrestricted movement required for physical pursuits from running to bouldering, while still being able to pair with a tie and sport coat when need be.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey're made from a breathable mid-weight 100% cotton, and feature a roomy fit, top to bottom, plus a bunch of other small features that we hope will make them a new favourite. Here's a vertical rundown:\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eEight big belt loops\u003c\/strong\u003e: This is more than most pants, but if you've got roomy pants, having a couple extra loops helps keep the waist at waist level, and with an even number, we've done away with that one pesky belt loop that always makes the pain point right on your spine. Also, these loops are a bit bigger than normal belt loops, meaning you don't need to worry about your beefy wide belt fitting in them. Small details, and they may be irrelevant to your case, but if you know, you know. \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eSix generous pockets\u003c\/strong\u003e: We've all got cargo, but we don't all want extra pockets halfway down the leg jangling around. While we haven't gone ridiculous on pocket size, we've discretely up-sized them from average pants, and we've added an extra coin pocket for ya. There's no special closures on the pockets, but they are deep enough and cut well enough to help prevent spillage when you're in and out of your vehicle and so on throughout the day. \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eHidden diamond gusset\u003c\/strong\u003e: This is a little feature that's not uncommon in sportswear where range of motion is necessary, but you rarely see it in daily use pants. The gusseted crotch basically takes the stress off the inseam and allows freer movement, but it's barely noticeable during normal daily activities. \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eRobust cotton canvas\u003c\/strong\u003e: These are made from 260gsm 100% cotton canvas. This is a good mid-weight.. thick enough to feel substantial and to take abuse, but noticeably lighter than most denim pants. The construction is reinforced with bar tacks at all stress points. They are stiff out of the bag but soften right up after a wash or two.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003ePlenty of slack\u003c\/strong\u003e: The fit of these is roomy all the way to the bottom cuff, but not offensively so. The effect is a casual look that gives a very relaxed feel, without trying too hard at it. Read the back story below for more on the fit. \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eWide hems\u003c\/strong\u003e: The slacks are designed to be cuffed or rolled, and because of this, we're not offering shorter lengths. With rolls in mind, we've given them a wide hem at the bottom. Between the hem and the sturdy material, rolls stay put remarkably well. \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eGrey and Black (April 2022 production):\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e Based on the success of our first production, we expanded inventory to cover waist sizes 28\" to 42\"\u003c\/span\u003e in this second round, and we've added the two most requested colours (grey and black). We also created an option for inseam lengths of 32\" and 34\". Note that due to feedback on shrinkage with the first production, we've kept roughly the same length as previous production (a true 33) on the 32\" inseam, in order to accommodate shrinkage and cuffing. The 34\" inseam is actually closer to a 35 on a fresh pair, but will likely shrink down a bit to the labelled 34 size with washing and drying. manufactured to our individual specifications, and unlike anything else you'll find on the market. In fact, it is extremely difficult to find real silk cord for purchase anywhere period. Most of what is listed online as silk cord is actually synthetic fibres, and it was the lack of real silk cord that compelled us to seek out a manufacturer who could make some for us.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eKernmantle (sheath and core) Silk Cords\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur original silk cords (those listed with a gram weight) are 100% pure silk, with a round-woven sheath, and inner core strands, much like conventional paracord\u003cspan\u003e. The cord is surprisingly robust (our supplier actually provides silk for industrial applications as well, due to its awesome properties). Although it can fray, it resists wear very well, and tends to get smoother and softer with use. The cord is slightly dynamic, meaning it has a small amount of stretch to it. Although it looks quite like standard paracord, it has a softer feel to it, especially after some use. It holds its shape well and doesn't tend to flatten out or stiffen over time. Note that (like Kevlar) the ends can't be singed flat; however, the tassels on the silk cord are extremely soft and definitely score as a feature not a bug. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e3mm Integrally Woven Silk Cord:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe 3mm integrally woven silk cord is single-braid, meaning that there is no outer sheath and inner strands. This is the construction used in our kevlar cords, whereas our additional range of silk cords are kernmantle construction (outer sheath and inner core strands) like conventional paracord. Perfomance-wise, the integral cord feels firmer than our existing silk cords, but is still plenty supple. In that respect, it is comparable to broken-in 2mm kevlar cord. It has a little bit of stretch to it, but less than our other silk cords. Broken in, it become extremely supple, but retains the firm feel, and importantly, it doesn't flatten out the way sheathed cords can.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDetails and recommended uses: \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eIntegrally Woven (roughly 3mm thick)\u003c\/strong\u003e: best suited for begleri with a 3.5mm bore, and available in blue, green, peacock, black, white, and crimson red; comparable to broken-in 2mm kevlar cord; technically usable for MKUltras but requires considerable patience and effort to string two strands through the Boss bead, and thinner bore beads may hang on the cord during raindrops\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003e7g (roughly 4mm thick)\u003c\/strong\u003e: best for begleri with a 4mm bore (can work with 3.5mm), and available in black (with blue core) or blue (with white core); slightly thicker\/ cushier than 550 paracord, and slightly coarser in weave\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003e4.7g (roughly 2.8 to 3.5mm thick)\u003c\/strong\u003e: suitable for begleri with a 3 to 4mm bore, and available in black (with blue core); most similar to 550 paracord, but softer\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003e3.8g (roughly 2.5mm thick)\u003c\/strong\u003e: suitable for any metal or Delrin MKUltras, or begleri with a 3 to 3.5mm bore; similar to 275 paracord, but much softer (not recommended for jade bodhi or wooden ultras, as they are more prone to snagging on the cord)\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eAll options sold in 2m, 5m and 10m lengths \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eNote\u003c\/strong\u003e: Since the ends of the silk cord cannot be singed like paracord, they will fray quickly. It's solidly in the category of what we might call badass plastics. These are materials that demonstrate exceptional properties, which truly set them apart from conventional polymers. Ultem has actually been around since the 1980s, but has only recently become widely commercially avaiable, and has subsequently exploded into the EDC scene. You'll see it in everything from knife handles to flashlights and everything in between. Part of what makes Ultem special is that when it sets and solidifies, the polymers bond in a way that prevents re-melting, even under extreme heat. This gives the material excellent thermal properties. It's also UV, chemical, and flame resistant, and due to its hardness, it can be machined very precisely, and much thinner than other plastics. Strictly speaking, none of these properties are required for a set of beads, but as with titanium on kevlar, there's just something awesome in knowing that what you have in your hand is exceptional.. that you could, if you wanted, use it for aerospace applications. The material has a crisp and solid feel in the hand. The polished versions have a glossy texture, similar to acrylic, while the machined finished versions have a soft feel, almsot like sea glass. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTo most collectors and EDC enthusiasts, the most distinctive feature of Ultem might be its appearance. It is truly something to behold. In its natural state, the material is clear or semi-transparent, with a deep golden yellow or amber colour. In fact, it looks and feels remarkably like an amber resin, and there is an interesting connection there that is worth elaborating. Amber is one of the traditionally prized materials used for komboloi and worry beads, throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East. And while we often think of traditional materials as being those that are naturally occurring, this is not entirely the case with worry beads. Amber itself is often stabilized with synthetic resins, but beyond this, readers of bead history will also see frequent reference to exotic sounding materials like Faturan, Bakelite, Parkesine, and Catalin. These are all polymer plastics - prized by antique collectors, and still used today in modern production. This historical context helps to legitimize a higher end polymer like Ultem in our product range, and in some ways, it's kind of symbolic of our journey. One of this things Aroundsquare has done well as a brand over the years is to respect and build on the historical roots of the products we create, and extend them into the modern era. We always seek to recognize and honour these roots, while bringing out contemporary designs using the best available modern materials.
